Part of a contemporary building (2020), this flat is located in Avenidas Novas, Lisbon. The original space, a two-bedroom flat, had a minimalist design, with pine flooring and white woodwork, including ceiling-height pivot doors without mouldings or trims. The kitchen was integrated into this aesthetic, with uniform panels and a white lacquer finish.
The flat has two fronts: one facing north towards Avenida Miguel Bombarda and the other facing south, towards the interior of the block, where there is a pleasant terrace. However, the original layout did not make the most of this connection with the outside. The floor plan featured a central bathroom that obstructed the entrance, and the connection between the kitchen and the terrace was narrow, almost like a corridor. The living room, facing the avenue, had little natural light, while the two bedrooms faced the terrace.

Redesigned plan
The remodelling proposal reverses this logic: the social area (living room, kitchen and dining area) now connects directly to the terrace, benefiting from greater light and spatial fluidity. The central bathroom is eliminated, making the entrance wider and unobstructed.
The former living room space, facing the avenue, has been transformed into a master suite, with a bathroom and an interior bedroom or walk-in wardrobe. This creates a clear separation between the social and private areas. The social area is open and integrated with the terrace, while a door leads to a more secluded corridor, where the bedrooms, storage rooms and bathrooms are located.
As for the finishes, the original style was respected: the pine flooring was extended to the kitchen, replacing the ceramic tiles, to ensure visual unity. Existing carpentry elements, such as the pivot doors, were also retained.

A striking detail of the intervention was the creation of a metal ‘bar’ style shelf in the kitchen, giving it prominence and character. Bronze mirrors were applied to the wall of the entrance hall, reflecting the green of the terrace and bringing nature into the house. This gesture sums up the central objective of the project: to reinforce the connection between the flat and its outdoor space.
